why did god toy with abraham?

Reflection

The story of Abraham and Isaac is perhaps the most harrowing in all of scripture — a father commanded to sacrifice his beloved son, the child of promise, on a lonely mountaintop. It feels like divine cruelty, doesn't it? A test that cuts too deep.

But the ancient Hebrew understanding saw something different unfolding. This wasn't capricious toying. It was God revealing what kind of deity He actually is — not one who demands child sacrifice, as the surrounding nations' gods did, but one who provides a substitute, a ram caught in the thicket. The test wasn't to see if Abraham would comply; God already knew his heart. It was to demonstrate, for all generations, that the God of Abraham does not want our children on altars. He wants our trust even when nothing makes sense.

Abraham's journey up that mountain mirrors every moment we're asked to surrender what we love most, not knowing how the story ends. The anguish is real. But so is the provision. At the breaking point, God intervenes. The knife never falls. The text says Abraham named that place "The Lord Will Provide" — and in that naming, fear transforms into testimony.

This isn't about a god who plays games with human hearts. It's about a God who enters into the terror of faith with us, who understands what it means to give up a son — and who, unlike Abraham, would one day not stay His own hand.
