Reflection
It is a profound gesture of love and hope that leads some to extend sacred ordinances to those who have passed from this life. The scriptures reveal a boundless love and a desire for all of God's children to have the opportunity to receive the blessings of the gospel. It is understood that the plan of salvation is for all, and that mercy reaches beyond the veil of death.
This practice is rooted in the understanding that the gospel is preached even to those who are in spirit prison, and that provision is made for all to accept its truths. Those who have passed on have not had the opportunity in this life to receive certain covenants. Therefore, willing proxies on earth can act on their behalf, allowing the departed to choose whether or not to accept these sacred gifts. It is a testament to the far-reaching mercy of our Heavenly Father and the infinite power of Christ's atoning sacrifice, which extends to all His children.
Passages
"For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water." — 1 Peter 3:18-20 · New Testament (quoted in Pearl of Great Price)
"And the voice of the Lord came unto me, saying: After many days I will reveal unto you concerning this thing. Therefore, when ye obtain a calling in this church, and it becometh your duty and your business to handle all matters which pertain to the church and the building up thereof, ye shall take especial care that ye cause none of these things to be lightly spoken of, or to be put forth with insufficient grace." — Doctrine and Covenants 124:15 · Doctrine and Covenants
