What does the Qur'an say about Jews and Christians?

Reflection

The sacred texts speak of Jews and Christians with a deep reverence, recognizing them as "People of the Book." They share a lineage of prophets and divine revelations that precede the final unfolding of truth. The Qur'an, in particular, acknowledges the scriptures given to Moses and Jesus, and sees those who follow these earlier revelations with sincerity as having a shared heritage of seeking the Divine.

There is a recognition of a common spiritual root, a call to submission to the One God, and a shared ethical framework. While acknowledging differences in the unfolding of divine guidance, the texts encourage understanding and respect, emphasizing that ultimately, all will return to the Creator to be judged according to their deeds and the sincerity of their hearts.

Passages

"Say, 'O People of the Scripture, come to a common word between us and you that we will not worship except Allah, [and that] we will not associate anything with Him or take one another as lords besides Allah.' But if they turn away, say, 'Bear witness that we are Muslims [in submission to Him].'" — Al 'Imran 3:64 · Qur'an

"And this, your religion, is one religion, and I am your Lord, so fear Me." — Al Mu'minun 23:52 · Qur'an

"Indeed, those who have believed and those who were Jews and the Sabeans and the Christians who believed in Allah and the Last Day and did righteousness – no fear will there be concerning them, nor will they grieve." — Al Ma'idah 5:69 · Qur'an
